Acknowledgement of Country

The Great Alpine Gallery would like to acknowledge the Gunaikurnai people who are the traditional custodians of the land on which the Gallery is located and on which we practice our art. We would also like to pay respect to the elders past and present of the Gunaikurnai nation and extend that respect to other Aboriginal people.

Mission Statement

To provide a permanent exhibiting Gallery for Local Artists to display their work.
To provide a friendly, vibrant community venue which will enhance and encourage greater creative activity.
To attract and promote all forms of cultural events which will enhance and challenge the lives of people in our community.
To promote and foster the unique benefits and challenges of small community lifestyles.
To exhibit by example, a focal point of success which may encourage other community enterprises.

The Great Alpine Gallery Inc. was opened in October 1998 by artists living in the Omeo and Swifts Creek area of East Gippsland in the State of Victoria, Australia.

Their aim was to establish a permanent exhibiting venue where work could be displayed and sold locally. The objectives are to encourage greater creativity, to promote the diverse range of artistic talent of the area, and to foster these unique skills inspired by our beautiful environment for the benefit of the whole community.

Since that time the Gallery has operated as a non-profit community art-space run entirely by volunteers. The Gallery is housed in a retail space in the main street of Swifts Creek which had previously served a variety of retail operations over many decades. Our funding comes through memberships and donations, a commission on sales through our shop, and occasional successful grant applications

The main part of the Great Alpine Gallery is the gallery space. The gallery space features rotating displays of the work of local artists and a number of special exhibitions each year. Many of the items on display in the gallery space are also available for purchase. Entry to the gallery is free for all visitors, and everyone is welcome.

The Gallery also runs a range of workshops throughout the year. Some of these are run internally in the gallery itself, while others operate in alternative locations throughout the area. The resulting work from these workshops are often also featured in the gallery space.

Inside the gallery space and gift shop

Gift shop

The Gallery includes a fantastic gift shop. We have a great variety of artwork available for purchase, from gift cards, paintings, photography, and needlework to wood work, leather work, and unique pieces made with local natural and found man-made materials.

All the work in the Gallery shop is made by local artists and is offered at competitive prices. You can view some samples of the work of various artists on their individual pages on this site. The artworks make a wonderful purchase for yourself, or that unique gift for a special person or occasion.

The majority of the proceeds from sales are returned to the artists themselves, with a small commission going into the operating costs of the gallery to help keep us running.

Gift Certificates are also available for purchase in the Gallery or contact us to arrange purchase and delivery.

Gift Certificates available

The gallery space The Great Alpine Gallery is situated on the Great Alpine Road at Swifts Creek. From Bairnsdale you take the highway north alongside the picturesque Tambo River, or from Wangaratta and Bright the highway winds up to Mt Hotham and down through the beautiful high country via Omeo to Swifts Creek.

View the map on the contacts page or follow the link there to Google Maps to generate directions from your location.

The volunteers you'll meet while visiting the Gallery are mainly our local artists themselves. Drop in at any time for a browse and a friendly chat; if you're lucky you may be able to talk to one of our artists about their own work.

The Great Alpine Gallery makes a great destination for both locals and visitors alike. It's always worth a return visit as the displays and merchandise available for purchase are constantly changing.

You're always welcome at the Great Alpine Gallery!
