Joan is an artist from Gippsland, Victoria.
“I have a passion for textiles, particularly anything to do with wool. I have been spinning since the 1970’s, but have only recently had time to rekindle this interest. I love learning new techniques and have recently started spinning Art Yarn from a variety of fleece, mostly Merino blended with other fibres such as silk, camel, angora and alpaca. Whatever I use must be a natural fibre. I love knitting and crochet and produce a variety of items. I also have skeins of handspun wool at the Gallery for those wishing to create their own garment.
My other passion is natural or vegetable dyes which give beautiful colours ranging from pale yellow to brown, kaki and bright orange. My favourite natural dye is produced by the leaves of the Yellow Box tree (Eucalyptus melliodora) which produces colours in the apricot to bright orange shades. Much of my garden is grown for vegetable dyes including smoke bush, marigold, coreopsis, hollyhock and many more.
We owned a bush property at Ensay for 25 years and I have a love of The Tambo Valley, and enjoy immensely my drive to Swifts Creek, from Paynesville to do my volunteer day”.
